Structure and Aims of the German Oriental Society.

The German Oriental Society is a registered association with its base in Berlin. Its executive bodies are the general meeting, the board, and the advisory committee.

The board is elected for a period of three years at the Society's annual general meetings. It consists of the chairman, the secretary and the treasurer, along with their respective representatives. The board nominates an advisory committee from the circle of the members, which normally consists of six people. The term of office for the advisory committee ends with that of the board that elected it.

Every member receives the Mitteilungen der Deutschen Orient-Gesellschaft, as well as the magazine Alter Orient aktuell, free of cost upon publication. In addition, they may purchase GOS publications at a reduced price.

Since the work of the GOS is not aimed at generating a profit, all proceeds are to be used solely for purposes that agree with the goals laid down in the statutes. These are:

1.) Researching the history and cultures of the Middle East and their spheres of influence from the beginnings to the Middle Ages;
2.) Disseminating research findings from the Middle East and stimulating public interest in these cultures.

These goals are principally to be attained by:

Information on the numerous field expeditions conducted by or in connection with the GOS in Middle Eastern countries may be found on this site in the sections "History" and "Excavations".

Apart from its annual journals Mitteilungen der Deutschen Orient-Gesellschaft and Alter Orient aktuell, the GOS runs five series of publications:

If you are interested in becoming a member of the GOS, please use the form in the section 'Mitgliedschaft' under the heading 'Kontakt'. It scarcely needs to be said that the GOS is grateful for every donation that helps it to realise its goals.
